Is online therapy less effective than in-person therapy?

Online therapy or e-therapy is the use of electronic communication to provide therapeutic interventions. Over the years, various forms of online therapy have been developed and evaluated for their effectiveness. There are studies showing that clients who received “online treatment” had similar outcomes as those receiving face-to-face treatment. Skeptics still think this type of therapy is less effective than face-to-face treatment.

Here are some points to consider why online is still as good as face-to-face meetings:

1. Qualifications:

Just like traditional therapy, online therapists must be licensed and have undergone years of training/ supervision. Therapists who practice online therapy should be accredited by agencies specializing in this type of treatment such as the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT). Thus, you don’t have to worry about the therapist’s qualifications especially if he/she has an accreditation.

2. Confidentiality:

You don’t have to worry about confidentiality since the information given during sessions will not be shared with others. You can freely discuss what you think or feel without fear of repercussions. Thus, online therapy is advantageous for those who are in occupations that require confidentiality.

3. Accessibility:

Clients don’t have to commute because sessions are done online via the Internet, phone, or videoconferencing. Thus, you can conveniently access therapy from your home or office. You can also take advantage of the time by doing other things while communication is being done e.g. cooking, washing clothes, or grocery shopping.

4. Online Therapist:

Just like traditional therapy, online therapists can provide information and advice that will guide you to deal with your problems and achieve your goals. You don’t have to worry about what time of the day it is because there’s always an available therapist who is willing to listen to you and provide support.

5. Cost:

Though online therapy is more convenient, it doesn’t mean that you will save money in the process. The cost is basically the same as traditional face-to-face sessions but you don’t have to pay for transportation and other expenses in going to a clinic or office. This can be advantageous for those who are on a tight budget.

Online Therapy vs Traditional Therapy

Traditionally, therapy is done face-to-face or in person. Thus, you have to travel to the therapist’s clinic or office. You can say that this type of therapy is more effective because of the first three points mentioned earlier on the advantages of traditional treatment versus online therapy. However, there are some clients who want privacy and discretion. Online therapy is the answer since you can chat with your therapist without revealing your identity.

The bottom line

One does not outweigh the other regarding effectiveness; it all depends on what you need or want at that moment in time. If face-to-face treatment is what you want, then that is what you should avail of. If online therapy is what you prefer, then that is your best option as well.

Not all therapists are the same when it comes to online and face-to-face treatment. So when choosing a therapist take into consideration his/her training in this area and other qualifications in treating patients.
